Report published on an inspection of HMP Fosse Way

HMP Fosse Way

Type of inspection: full inspection

Dates of inspection: 10–20 March 2025

Summary of findings: This was a reasonably positive inspection of a newly-opened prison. Prisoner-to-prisoner peer support, a wide range of enrichment activities, and a ‘departure lounge’ to support prisoners as they left had already been established. However, drugs were too easily available and high levels of violence meant prisoners felt unsafe. The inexperience of staff was evident and junior staff required better support. Waits to access some health care services were too long.

Points to note: More needed to be done to help prisoners prepare for release, including increasing their contact with prison offender managers and making sure more of them attended education and achieved qualifications.
