About The Role
This is an exciting opportunity to join a small, busy communications team working with a Head of Communications and a second Communications Officer. As the team is small, the range of work and experience that you will gain is diverse, including opportunities to work across media, digital (including social media), publications, events, stakeholder engagement and internal communications.
The Communications Team is responsible for publishing reports from inspections of places of detention, including prisons, immigration removal centres and young offender institutions in England and Wales. The team is also responsible for managing a programme of strategic communication to enhance the Inspectorate’s reputation and influence on issues relating to the conditions and treatment of detainees.
The successful candidate will be expected to take up post in [2024], but the exact date will depend on the timescales for interviews and security clearance processes.

Inspection Support – Grade AO (Band E)
About The Role
This is a unique post within a small and friendly secretariat team, which principally involves providing administrative support to ensure that our inspections run effectively.
Key responsibilities include supporting the Deputy Chief Inspector with managing the current ongoing inspection programme and allocations plan, liaising with a range of internal colleagues, external partner organisations and stakeholders about our inspections and inspection/thematic reports and managing the correspondence sent to our general enquiries in-box from prisoner’s families and friends and other members of the public. The role involves dealing with sensitive material on a regular basis, so a high level of discretion and judgement is required.
The post sits within the secretariat team at HM Inspectorate of Prisons which provides a wide range of services to support the effective delivery of inspections. The post holder will also provide administrative assistance within the Secretariat such as booking hotels and travel for inspection teams and taking minutes at corporate meetings. There will be the opportunity to get involved with other elements of the secretariat teams work and shadowing an inspection. The post holder will be line managed by the Executive Assistant to the Chief Inspector/Deputy Chief Inspector. This post involves working a minimum of three days a week in the office and two days from home.

HR Inspection Support – Grade AO (Band E)
About The Role
This is a unique post within a small and friendly secretariat team which offers an excellent opportunity to develop written and oral communication skills to a high standard.
Key tasks include recruitment exercises, managing a wide range of information for the inspectorate. The post also offers opportunities to develop some knowledge of HR, Learning &Development (L&D) and general administrative skills. There will be opportunity to get involved with other elements of the secretariat teams work, shadowing an inspection and opportunity to develop further skills.
