Inspection of escort and removals to India

Type of inspection: full inspection

Dates of inspection: 25–26 March 2025

Summary of findings: Individuals were treated with respect and consideration, and leaders had encouraged staff professionalism. Home office staff were available to update detainees throughout, and little force was used. The allocation of detainees to specific staff had started to improve the sharing of information on detainees’ vulnerabilities. However, not enough attention was given to the needs of women and detainees were not always allowed to use the toilets in privacy.

Points to note: Although many of those being removed knew the day they were scheduled to leave, they were unaware of other details, which made planning for their arrival in India difficult.
