Report published 20 July
HMP Ashfield
Type of inspection: Full inspection
Dates of inspection: 13–23 April 2026
Summary of findings: Ashfield was a well-run prison with a positive culture and committed leadership and staff. Strengths included the induction of new prisoners, the quality and quantity of key work, support for older men, and work to promote family engagement. The use of prisoners to provide peer support, the promotion of healthy eating, and the well-embedded reading strategy were also notable.
Points to note: Although much good work was being done at the prison, the oversight of prisoner complaints, health care, and education and work required improvement. More also needed to be done to promote inclusivity and fair treatment.
