Report published 4 December 2023

Published:

HMP Littlehey

Type of inspection: Full unannounced inspection

Dates of inspection: 4–14 September 2023

Summary of findings: Littlehey is a category C prison holding men convicted of sexual offences, many of whom were over the age of 70 years. The prison was safe and well-led by an ambitious governor, and relationships between prisoners and staff were caring and respectful. Health care services were under-resourced and provision was insufficient for the current population, which included, for example, about 20 people living on the residential units requiring end-of-life care.

Points to note:  The prison was clean and many facilities, particularly outside, were excellent. Other parts required significant investment and refurbishment with shabby buildings and mouldy, poorly ventilated showers. The backlog of repair work was considerable.
