Report published 30 October 2023

Published:

HMP/YOI Sudbury

Type of inspection: Full unannounced inspection

Dates of inspection: 24 July – 3 August 2023

Summary of findings: Nearly all prisoners at HMP Sudbury, an open prison holding just over 600 adult men, were in full time work or education, with many attending paid employment in the community. Whilst the prison remained safe, with violent incidents being rare, the prison had a drug problem and not enough was being done to reduce both supply and demand. The prison buildings and accommodations were in poor condition with substantial investment needed.

Points to note: Support for prisoners to maintain family ties was very good. There were creative opportunities for prisoners to engage with their children including a breakfast club, a homework club, musical activities, and sharing stories.
