Report on HMP Nottingham.

HMP Nottingham

Type of inspection: independent review of progress

Dates of inspection: 24–26 February 2025

Summary of findings: Self-harm and violence had increased, with the rise linked to substance misuse, debt, gang affiliations and mental health issues, among other factors. A homicide had occurred shortly after the full inspection in 2024. Although clear efforts had been made to improve key work provision, and education and work had expanded to include more spaces for those with lower literacy and numeracy levels, many prisoners were not assigned to appropriate activities.

Points to note: ‘Grab bags’ containing activities, games and reading material for prisoners in crisis and under constant supervision had been introduced. There were still delays with hospital transfers in relation to mental health difficulties, but the prison had made sure patients in segregation awaiting transfer were monitored appropriately.
