HMP Ranby
Type of inspection: Independent review of progress
Dates of inspection: 20-22 October 2025
Summary of findings: A capable governor and visible frontline managers were committed to driving forward improvements. The environment was cleaner than at the last inspection and living conditions were better overall. However, larger houseblocks were still in a poor state and in need of investment.
The ‘longer working week’ trial in workshops, where prisoners stayed unlocked at lunchtime, was a promising early sign of better access to purposeful activity.
Points to note: The wide availability of drugs remained a considerable concern. HM Prison and Probation Service needed to invest in physical security to limit the amount of drugs getting into the prison via drones.
