Report published 20 June 2023

Published:

HMP Swansea

Type of inspection: Full unannounced inspection

Dates of inspection: 21 February – 10 March 2023

Summary of findings: The prison had improved in every area since the last inspection. At the heart of this progress was a culture focusing on encouraging prisoners to attend education, skills and work provision, with incentives such as evening association and extra gym sessions leading to much better engagement with the regime and time out of cell than in other reception prisons.

Points to note: Prisoners received good support to maintain relationships with family and friends, including weekly baby and toddler groups which allowed prisoners to spend two hours in a relaxed environment with their children and other members of their family.
