HMYOI Werrington

Published:
Open document

Report on an unannounced inspection of HMYOI Werrington by HM Chief Inspector of Prisons (15 April – 2 May 2025).

Werrington healthy establishment scores

Bar chart showing healthy healthy establishment scores for HMYOI Werrington in 2-23 and 2025. The score for safety has improved from poor to not sufficiently good; the score for care has remained not sufficiently good; the score for purposeful activity has remained poor; and the score for resettlement has remained reasonably good.

What we found

Children spent too long locked up and did not get enough access to education. When they did, the curriculum was insufficiently challenging and did not help them prepare for life outside. Staff were failing to manage behaviour well enough: incentives were not applied consistently, and 20% of children said they felt unsafe. Only 34% felt cared for by staff, whose time was largely taken up with managing the separation of those who had to be kept apart for safety reasons.

The governor and her team were aware of shortcomings and had enacted an improvement plan to address them the month before the inspection.
