HMP & YOI Deerbolt

Report on an independent review of progress at HMP & YOI Deerbolt by HM Chief Inspector of Prisons (13–15 October 2025)

What we found (Back to top)

Despite commendable efforts to reduce the supply and use of drugs, progress had been limited. Levels of violence and self-harm remained high overall but had both reduced since the inspection. Health services were now generally reliable.

Employment support for prisoners was good. The prison had established strong connections with a range of national and regional employers, and careers guidance workers helped prisoners nearing release to research job vacancies.

Points to note: A significant shortfall in staff meant it was difficult to offer a consistent day-to-day routine for prisoners, and the future visa status of officers recruited from overseas was a risk to future progress.
