Report on an independent review of progress at HMP Erlestoke by HM Chief Inspector of Prisons, 22–24 April 2025.

What we found

There were encouraging signs of progress: overall levels of violence were now lower than in similar prisons, there had been some good work to address antisocial behaviour, and the use of force had decreased. The proportion of planned key work sessions taking place had increased significantly (from 35% to 68%), and a plan was in place to drive up their quality. However, drugs remained too easily available, with the rate of positive random drug tests remaining at 32%, and support for prisoners who needed help with reading still was not good enough.

Points to note: Positive steps had been taken to address negative perceptions of treatment among prisoners from ethnic minority backgrounds, with additional forums and action taken to improve relationships.
