What we found

Staff and leaders at the County Durham centre had worked hard to create a less institutional environment. Thoughtful use of design and initiatives such as a well-equipped cultural kitchen, where women cooked and shared food together, helped to build a sense of community. A busy, welcoming library offered a social space where women could ask staff for help, use the internet, browse books, CDs and DVDs and participate in a range of activities often linked to national and international themed days.

Women could also engage in a wide range of purposeful activities – including education, work and fitness opportunities – that supported their physical and mental health. An activities timetable was translated into several languages, and women could access a large, well-maintained outside area throughout the day.
