Reports published 2 November

Published:

HMP Spring Hill

Type of inspection: Full inspection

Dates of inspection: 10–20 August 2026

Summary of findings: Although there were many positive aspects to life at Spring Hill, drugs and mobile phones were easily available, residential huts were dilapidated, standards of cleanliness and maintenance had declined, and the jail lacked the community ethos expected at an open prison. More work was required to prepare men for release and release on temporary licence needed to be better managed.

Points to note: Teachers and instructors lacked the skills to adapt education and work sessions for prisoners with special educational needs and disabilities, the curriculum above level 2 was limited, and too many men were late for, or failed to attend, activities.
