Summary of findings: The prison was safe and decent. The governor had worked to further reduce levels of violence, drug-taking and use of force against prisoners to minimal levels, relationships between staff and prisoners were mostly good, and the buildings and grounds were well maintained. Less positively, prisoners did not get enough help to progress in their sentences, self-catering facilities were too limited for a training prison holding men serving long sentences, and prisoners with mobility problems found it challenging to get around the prison.

Points to note: There were significant problems with the education, skills and work provision. There were not enough places for all men to participate, the curriculum did not offer a broad enough range of opportunities, and links with employers were not adequate to help all the men being released into employment.
