Reports published 23 February

Published:

HMP Coldingley

Type of inspection: Full inspection

Dates of inspection: 10–20 November 2025

Summary of findings: Drugs were easily available, the rate of serious prisoner-on-prisoner violence was high, and staff were not doing enough to address poor behaviour on the wings. Prisoner attendance at work and education activities was not good enough and there were too few places to study English and maths. Not enough work was being done with prisoners to help them progress in their sentences.

Points to note: Leaders set clear priorities and engaged with prisoners, men could contribute to daily life through peer work, forums and the prisoner council, and work had been done to help those serving indeterminate sentences to understand parole processes.

HMP Thameside

Type of inspection: independent review of progress

Dates of inspection: 12–14 January 2026

Summary of findings: New leaders had begun to drive progress. Improvements in health care were particularly noteworthy, the quality of teaching was better, and there were more effective processes to allocate men to activities. Support for those at risk of self-harm was more robust. However, there was still too much violence in the prison, with too many serious incidents, and drugs were still too easily available.

Points to note: Funding for enhanced gate security had yet to be agreed, too few staff searches were carried out, and not enough prisoner drug tests were completed in response to intelligence.
