HMP Featherstone

Published:
Bar graph illustrating the healthy prison outcomes scores for HMP Featherstone when it was inspected by HMIP in 2022 and 2025. The graph shows that the score for safety had declined from reasonably good to not sufficiently good. The scores for respect, purposeful activity and preparation for release had remained not sufficiently good.

What we found (Back to top)

Despite committed leadership at HMP Featherstone, robust action is required to improve outcomes. The positive random mandatory drug testing rate remained high and self-inflicted deaths were the tenth highest in male adult prisons. Conditions in many residential units were poor, training opportunities were too limited – failing to provide prisoners with the skills they needed for employment – and support to prevent reoffending in the future was not good enough.

Although drugs were a significant issue, some good initiatives were in place; a recovery wing was supporting prisoners to end their misuse, and individualised support was provided to prolific users.
