Despite committed leadership at HMP Featherstone, robust action is required to improve outcomes. The positive random mandatory drug testing rate remained high and self-inflicted deaths were the tenth highest in male adult prisons. Conditions in many residential units were poor, training opportunities were too limited – failing to provide prisoners with the skills they needed for employment – and support to prevent reoffending in the future was not good enough.
Although drugs were a significant issue, some good initiatives were in place; a recovery wing was supporting prisoners to end their misuse, and individualised support was provided to prolific users.
