Reports in inspections of HMP/YOI New Hall and HMP Garth
HMP/YOI New Hall
Type of inspection: Full inspection
Dates of inspection: 24 November – 1 December 2022
Summary of findings: An overwhelmingly safe and respectful prison with an effective governor who led a caring and engaged staff team. Access to purposeful activity was too limited.
Points to note: Key work was prioritised with numerous benefits to staff and prisoners, and self-harm was notably lower than other comparable prisons.

HMP Garth
Type of inspection: Full inspection
Dates of inspection: 7–18 November 2022
Summary of findings: The prison was safe and well led, but prisoners were spending far too long in their cells and needed more access to work and education. The ageing prison building was impeding respectful treatment and was in need of significant refurbishment.
Points to note: The prison was providing some very encouraging and preventative interventions targeted at more vulnerable prisoners, as well as some useful multidisciplinary support for those in segregation. Although it was in its early days, the prison was showing good commitment to key work.
