Reports on inspections at HMP Gartree and HMP Stocken

A report on an unannounced inspection of HMP Gartree

Type of inspection: Full inspection

Dates of inspection: 16-26 January 2023

Summary of findings: A positive culture built on excellent relationships between staff and prisoners and effective key working. Not enough prisoners were in education or work and the provision needed improvement, but prisoners’ time out of cell was much better than in most comparable prisons.

Points to note: The prison’s physical environment needed attention – communal areas were dirty, wings needed repainting and the heating did not always work.

A report on an unannounced inspection of HMP Stocken

Type of inspection: Full inspection

Dates of inspection: 16-27 January 2023

Summary of findings: Despite a severe shortage of staff, the acting governor had prioritised purposeful activity and Stocken was approaching pre-pandemic activity levels. Free-flow of prisoners had been reintroduced and up to 500 men were moving peaceably around the prison to work, education or training. Ninety per cent of men regularly attended workshops or education.

Points to note: The prison’s physical environment needed attention – wings needed repainting, some communal areas were dirty, there were problems with the heating and there were broken windows in need of repair.
